Medication abortion refers to a secure and efficient method of terminating a pregnancy. It requires the intake of two medications spread over a few days.
The initial abortion pill is Mifepristone, which halts the development of the pregnancy.
The second pill, Misoprostol, is taken after a 24-48 hour interval. This induces uterine cramps and bleeding, which help expel the pregnancy. The expected outcome is bleeding and cramping akin to a heavy menstrual cycle, with mild bleeding continuing for a few weeks.
Additional medications to relieve nausea and cramping are also included.
